FINDING PEGGY A Glascow Childhood

Dorothy Paul's infectious Scottish burr carries this memoir of the author's upbringing in a housing project in the 1950s. Henderson's dreary existence is bolstered by the closeness of family and neighbors and the support of two strong women--her mother and Aunt Peggy. When the latter dies in childbirth, the family is shattered. Years later, Henderson, out of poverty and a mother herself, goes back to find out what really happened. Paul picks up on the humor, indignation, and occasional preachiness of the text and easily slips into the local dialect for some of the characters.
