This collection of short stories even contains a yarn from the great Mark Twain, "The Californian's Tale." All are a delight for listeners. Max Brand's "The Werewolf" starts the collection with the story of a soul-searching young man who finds his own truly brave soul. Next is Zane Grey's "The Great Slave." The various narrators portray each character with practiced ease, and sound effects give each episode added atmosphere. Cynthia Haseloff is the only female author represented, with "Redemption at Dry Creek," and the last story is, appropriately enough, Peter Dawson's "Retirement Day." As is customary for the genre, romance and morality play big roles, and the narrators use humor, dialects, and pacing to enhance the dialogue and narrative. Westerns like these are all about the characters and the gorgeous landscapes. S.C.A. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2013]
