In 49 b.c.e., Gordianus the Finder travels to the city of Massilia (Marseille) to discover the truth behind his son's reported death amid a brutal civil war. After a tragic episode beneath the besieged city walls, Gordianus quickly becomes entangled in a mystery involving more than his son's fate. Ralph Cosham is a sympathetic narrator who allows the facets of the lead character to come through. The twisting plot is kept moving through his skilled narration, and the unusual band of characters is easy to follow, thanks to his subtle and strong portrayals. This enjoyable listen sparks the listener's imagination, but uneven sound levels are a distraction. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2013]
