John Edwardson reads carefully but avoids any animation, emotion, or characterization in this biography of Benedict Arnold's life and career. Quotations are indicated by a slight pause beforehand, and the French-Canadian is anglicized. Throughout the book, the vocabulary and structure are more difficult than necessary, restricting Edwardson's ability to entertain. However, interesting descriptions of life in the Americas in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as the depiction of the primitive resources afforded to our revolution from British colonialism, save the presentation overall.
