Delivering a book that profiles Nazis must pose a challenge for a narrator. Be too repulsed, and you shortchange the author. Be too clinical, and your work comes off flat. Suzanne Toren strikes a nice balance in this book about women who served in the eastern areas of the Nazi empire. Toren lets the facts speak for themselves, including the women’s involvement in atrocities, but isn’t so cold that there is no sense of moral outrage. The author’s goal is to dispel the myth of women’s limited involvement in the Holocaust, and Toren ably complements Lower’s intent. Toren’s impressive command of German and Polish names and places makes the reading flow more easily. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2013]
