For listeners who are unfamiliar with modern Russian literature, prize- winning Andrei Gelasimov's most recent work is an excellent place to start. The main character of this post WWII novel, a boy named Petka, is fierce, rambunctious, and peppy. His vim and vigor are fully characterized in the narration of Nick Podehl. His portrayal emphasizes Petka's pluck through dialogue that rings with youthful enthusiasm. Podehl deftly alternates between history, conversation, and description by changing his pace and volume. The strength of his skill is his dexterity. He's also successful at embodying female characters without making them sound whiny. M.R. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2013]
