SNOWBOUND

Explorer John C. Fremont's expedition to San Francisco to map out a railroad route along the 38th parallel in the winter of 1849 came to a halt in the snow. Multiple voices take on the task of telling the story of a man who was an enigma but still attracted many followers. As Wheeler tells the story from multiple perspectives, listeners hear Fremont's wife, her young daughter, a rough-hewn adventurer, and an elegant British officer, among others. The many perspectives provide vivid descriptions of Fremont's journey--such as dying mules and men. Listening to this tale of hunger and cold may give some listeners a chill even as it fascinates.
