Andrew L. Barnes gives an effervescent performance of this inspiring story about a boy’s enterprising spirit. Barnes completely inhabits his characters as he captures their personalities with his impressive range of voices. James, an endearing, unassuming lad, whom Barnes portrays with a quirky boyish voice and a slight lisp, is eager to rise above his meager station in life. The booming voice Barnes gives to James’s father reveals a supportive and loving parent who encourages James to avoid the mistakes that he made with money. James’s grandmother, whom he addresses as “Mrs. Brown,” is portrayed with a high-pitched steeliness that suggests an austere and critical nature—which proves to soften with time. Overall, Barnes’s energetic performance is a great fit for this dynamic story. M.F. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2013]
