Janina Edwards's strong narration is convincing throughout the love story of Adé. Beginning with a spontaneous kiss with her college best friend, Miriam, the unnamed, biracial first-person narrator speeds through a journey of self-discovery and transformation. Her naïve, self-centered nature is revealed as she and Miriam journey from Egypt to Africa. Upon encountering Adé, the narrator dumps Miriam to immerse herself in Adé's culture and love, in the process being renamed Farida. Edwards portrays Farida with a pleasant lilt as as Adé's family tests her worthiness to wed him. When he insists on meeting her parents, thus requiring a trip to the U.S., complications abound, and Edwards delivers a gratifying conclusion.
