McDermott's nuanced writing turns the mundane into poetry. Kate Reading's narration fits perfectly as she weaves her way through this story of an ordinary person living an ordinary life. Marie is an Irish-American girl with severe vision problems who struggles to see and make sense of her world, inside and out. Her challenges lead her, and the listener, through a meandering plot that requires close attention to keep hold of the thread of the story.
