In addition to being an award-winning author, Nikki Grimes is a charming narrator. She deftly captures feisty and adorable Dymonde Daniel, her equally exuberant friends, and long-suffering (in a good way) mom. Dymonde unwisely heeds a bossy classmate's advice and demands that her mom buy her a stylish and expensive pair of sneakers. As punishment and a lesson, her mom takes away most of Dymonde's clothing. Grimes conveys family and school relationships as the girl "survives" going to school with one outfit. When a classmate's family loses everything in a fire, Dymonde begins a clothing drive. Her encouraging words to promote donations are priceless! Listeners will learn a valuable lesson regarding what we need versus what we want.
