TOUCHING MY FATHER'S SOUL A Sherpa's Journey to the Top of Everest

by | Read by Norbu Tenzing

Biography & Memoir • 6 hrs. • Abridged • © 2001

When the author climbed Everest with the IMAX filming team that fateful spring of 1996, thoughts of his late father, who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on his first ascent in 1953, were never far away. Mixing mountaineering anecdotes with Sherpa spirituality and family history, Norgay revisits the event first described by Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air), who has written, but does not read, the introduction here. Norgay's report is voiced by his brother in accented English with few dramatics. Dispassionately, but clearly, he outlines the Sherpa's role in Himalayan mountaineering and his reverence for Chomolungma, the local name for Everest. Only when describing the politics that followed the 1953 triumph (his father was pressured to say he had stepped on the summit first) does he exhibit much emotion. This is another view of the Everest experience and is definitely worth hearing. J.B.G. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT/ NOV 01]
