Christopher Hibbert is an excellent popular historian--scrupulous and unsentimental, with a fine eye for the telling detail. In ELIZABETH I, he finds a personality as rich, complex, and challenging as any biographer could hope for. David Case's measured enunciation proves to be a good vehicle for this author's precise and condensed style. Case effectively handles the broad array of titles, personalities, religious and political crosscurrents, and glorious pageantry that comprised the reign of this great queen and England’s most glorious age. Case is also good at conveying different levels of British dialect and courtly nuance, but, alas, his vocal rendering of the great queen is strictly camp.
