THE COLOR OF DEATH

Sir John Fielding, the blind magistrate of the Bow Street Court, is faced with a series of puzzling robberies in the seventh story based on the historical figure. Sir John and his assistant, Jeremy, investigate in the face of fear and prejudice when they are told that the criminals are a gang of black men. The narration is affected by the slow start of the action, but the varied accents of the different social classes are handled ably and clearly. Historically accurate epithets, now regarded as politically incorrect, may initially shock listeners but are integral to a story that contains an examination of slavery. B.F.
