Lotz's nuanced narration uses the biblical story of Hagar, along with personal examples, to illustrate how Christians wound one another. She vividly describes Hagar's spiritual and emotional wounding by Abraham, who sent Hagar and her son, Ishmael, away at his wife's insistence. The story is a good example of how those who feel wounded retaliate and wound others, and the cycle of pain and hurt that results. In a conversational tone Lotz also speaks about wounds she's experienced, such as speaking engagements being canceled because of the belief that men shouldn't be taught by women. In addition, she reveals times she's wounded others because of "spiritual blind spots." Forgiveness, she instructs, is essential to break the cycle of wounding--and for healing.
