The new Dressmakers series will delight fans of historical romance. Kate Reading's performance brings out the lush period details, immersing the listener in this fascinating world. With subtle inflections and nuances, Reading creates characters that are easily recognizable and sympathetic, most notably the talented Marcelline Noirotis, who is determined to win the patronage of the fiancée of the Duke of Clevedon by transforming her from the worst-dressed woman in Regency London into its most fashionable bride-to-be. Reading's narration evolves smartly, heightening the tension between Marcelline and Clevedon, and drawing listeners into their scandalous affair. Though her measured pace sometimes obscures the wit and humor in the prose, this is certainly a story to relish. B.E.K. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2014]
