After WWI, veteran Daniel Branwell can't find peace at home in his English village, in part because he's grieving the death of his boyhood friend, Frederick, killed in action. Narrator Gildart Jackson conveys the weight of Daniel's sadness without making the narration itself dreary. In the flashbacks, Jackson captures the warmth and camaraderie between Daniel and Frederick and makes their differing social classes clear. The time shifts between Daniel's childhood, his war experiences, and his current life after the war are slightly confusing in the audiobook form, but that minor inconvenience should not deter listeners from checking out this fine story and performance.
