Listening to these narrators is like listening to neighbors talk about what's happening on the block. This coming-of-age story about a black inner-city family from Massachusetts takes the listener on a dramatic journey seen through the eyes of the teenaged Andre and the people that impact his life. Narrators Arnell Powell, Simone Cook, and James Shippy convey an urgency that fits the characters' circumstances. When members from a local gang speak, their tone is raw, while Andre's character is both tough and vulnerable. As he gets more involved in gang-related activities, his voice becomes brasher. There are moments when it's hard to differentiate the male narrators' voices, but the story unfolds with intensity and excitement. T.E.C. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2014]
