Thanks to her talent for characterization, narrator Robin Eller convincingly delivers the romance between Underground Railroad conductor Hester Wyatt and the mysterious Black Daniel, a freedom fighter who appears at her hideaway seeking help and safety. Eller makes their emotional connection tangible from their first meeting. Her consistency and astute ear for accents help overcome potential confusion when Black Daniel returns as the wealthy and privileged Galen Vachon, a man Hester knows she can never have. Eller conveys Hester’s strength and Galen’s determination and devotion with impressive clarity, making each character a unique individual. Her delivery of the narrative, however, remains somewhat flat, obscuring the tension in the plot, as well as the flashes of humor and insight between the stretches of dialogue.
