THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

This swashbuckling tale of one man's anger, vengeance, and search for justice takes place in mid-eighteenth-century Portugal during the time of the Inquisition and the Great Lisbon Earthquake. Samuel Roukin narrates with such controlled intensity that we almost believe Sebastiao Laposa could singlehandedly destroy Jesuit inquisitors, right wrongs, and rescue damsels in distress. Roukin doesn't try to make his voice match the age or sex of each character, but through tone and pacing he conveys the determination, fear, rage, and other passions that drive each of the troubled souls in the corrupt city of Lisbon.
