Though a capable narrator, Patrick Lawlor is a bit of a mismatch for Sandeep Jauhar's reflective, revealing memoir, which offers listeners a close-up look at how the practice--and payment--of medicine has changed in recent decades. Saddled with debt and family responsibilities, Jauhar writes openly of the challenges of practicing medicine ethically, caring first and foremost for the patient in a field that rewards expediency. While Lawlor is attuned to Jauhar's disillusionment and frustration, he seems to muscle his way through the prose, at times overplaying scenes of conflict as well as accents. Missteps aside, Lawlor's intentional performance captures the emotional toll that Jauhar's professional decisions take on his sense of self as a person and a caregiver.
