Listeners follow three intertwined lives across three diverse settings. From India, to England, to Guyana, listeners meet the main characters first as children who are struggling against the constraints imposed by traditional society and their parents. Anne Flosnik recounts the ups and downs of these varied lives with depth of feeling and sympathy. Her earnestness makes believable the innocent observations of children about the puzzling adults around them. Flosnik's breathy voice sets the tone for the mystery and adventure at the core of this coming-of-age story. However, the steadiness of her pace and cadence tends to grow repetitive if listened to over long intervals. Nonetheless, this well-crafted story, told with deliberation, makes most of its dramatic twists and turns. M.R. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2015]
