Medina's chilling debut takes audible form through Mary Jane Wells's narration. The Cambodian-set thriller is steeped in superstition and suspense as an English woman works clearing mines in a place where her ex-husband died suspiciously. While Wells's reading reflects little of the story's distinct setting and rich atmosphere, she elicits respect for the customs and horror for the atrocities depicted in the plot. She also adeptly juggles a variety of accents for the multicultural cast and recounts the characters' internal conflicts with compassion and authenticity. Even though this audiobook doesn't excel, WHITE CROCODILE is an exciting, dark story that thriller fans should find suitably captivating.
