Micah Bishop, a down-on-his-luck gambler, is rescued from certain death in the Mojave Desert by an unsavory outlaw who is taking a load of mail-order brides to a mining town. When Bishop finds out that the unsuspecting brides are meant to become soiled doves, he discovers what kind of man he really is. Narrator Henry Strozier doesn't take advantage of the first-person narrative to fully inhabit the personality of Bishop. He reads at a slow, steady pace that makes the story pleasant to listen to and easy to follow but also makes Bishop's cowboy slang sound forced and detracts from the action scenes. Strozier's secondary characters' voices are much more animated and engaging. But, overall, Strozier's deep voice and clear enunciation make this pleasant listening for fans of Western audiobooks.
