Listening to narrator Ova Saopeng deliver contemporary artist and author Fujimura's reflections is an arduous task for the Western ear. The audiobook will make sense only to those who have read Shusaku Endo's novel--or seen the movie SILENCE--about the seventeenth-century persecution of Christians in Japan. With that background, the audiobook is a beautiful account of perseverance amid the greatest of trials. Without it, the listener may be lost throughout most of the audiobook. Regardless, the listener will find that the themes of hiddenness, ambiguity, and beauty resonate with present-day concerns about freedom of religion and the worldwide persecution of Christians.
