SEPTEMBER GIRL

Author/narrator Kathryn Leigh Scott smoothly transitions between the two settings of this novel. In New York City in the mid-1960s young Olivia Hammond is a single working woman at a news magazine. Many years later, when she is much older and newly widowed, she discovers an engagement ring that was never given to her by the hard-living, relationship-phobic lost love from that time in her life. Can they overcome old hurts, get past long-buried secrets, and discover whether the path not taken was better for everyone concerned? Scott believably portrays Olivia at all stages of her life, as well as her former lover, Robert Yardly. She is especially effective at portraying nasty Aunt Dora, giving her a disdainful Southern drawl guaranteed to make listeners dislike her from the get-go.
