Narrator Natasha Soudek guides listeners through the setting and characters of this Christian sci-fi audiobook. Lady Firebird of Netaia is a "wasteling," too far down in the birth order of her royal family's lineage to be of any worth. When she is chosen to lead an attack on the neighboring planet of Veroh, she knows that if she survives, she will be eliminated soon after her return. But instead of dying during the battle, she is taken prisoner and, surprisingly, given new hope for life outside of Netaia. In portraying the various characters, Soudek switches from a gentle to a sharp-edged tone, and to conniving coldness.
