In 1939, David Reid, an American photographer who is half Jewish, meets Nadia, the daughter of a Polish baron, during the invasion of Poland by the Nazis. Her father asks David to take Nadia to safety in England. Natasha Soudek creates a sense of urgency for these characters with clipped German and Polish accents that drop listeners into this historical period. Natasha and David encounter a dying Jewish woman with a newborn and other children. Soudek depicts the tones of love and loss in the voice of the mother, who knows she will not see her children again. Soudek's fine performance will spark tears and nail biting from listeners as David and Nadia attempt to survive the Nazi invaders. E.E.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2024]
