Talking with Nick Sullivan

Nick Sullivan spent many years as a consumer of audiobooks before connecting his own acting talents to the medium. As a listener, he was always aware of what the narrator brought to the experience. As a working actor and teacher of voice and speech, Nick's interest has always been in dialect and accents. A random conversation piqued his interest in the Talking Books program at the American Foundation for the Blind, and Nick turned his skills to audiobooks. His audiography now includes more than 135 titles recorded for BBC Audiobooks America, Audio Partners, and AFB's program. "For actors, it's an amazing opportunity to insert themselves into the heads of so many characters," Nick told us. His mastery of accents has served him well with Latin characters, African-Americans, women of all ages, Quebecois separatists, and Florida "crackers." VALLEY OF BONES is celebrated in this issue, and we've heard fine performances of the works of Bill Pronzini, Laurance Klavan, Stuart Kaminsky, Lawrence Block, and Carl Hiassen. Nick's foray into nonfiction, TOUCH THE TOP OF THE WORLD , was an Audie Award finalist.
